The Power of Prayer

Prayer is two-way communication between you and God. The answer to your prayers might be yes, no or not yet. Sometimes, we feel like God has not answered or He wasn’t listening. The reality is, sometimes we don’t like the answer we received.

A great example of a yes, happened a few years ago at our churches Band of Brothers men’s prayer and bible study meeting. One of the men was suffering from painful back problems. He asked me not to use his name so I won’t. Most of us call him by his initials. He has a tender heart as big as all outdoors.

That night at the meeting, through his pain, he told us the doctor’s said he had a ruptured disc in his lower back and stenosis of the spine that would require an operation and significant healing time. He was added to our weekly prayer list.

At the end of each night we join hands in a circle and those who feel comfortable in doing so lift up a prayer. Someone suggested we lay hands on him and pray specifically for his healing.

The next week at our meeting, someone suggested we pray over him again. He declined saying he had already accepted and received from last week and was now praising God for the healing He was doing.

Six weeks later at another meeting, with tears in his eyes, he shared that doctors had told him on re-examination they could now only find one area that needed attention. And, it could be done in and out the same day. That is the power of prayer!

The way to experience the power of prayer is to pray. We should thank God for the prayers He has answered with a yes, but also for the ones that were answered with a no or not now. Each answer molds our lives and our fellowship with Him. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
