I know it’s hard for some people to understand why we hunt. They don’t understand that we don’t hunt just to kill. We hunt to watch the sunrise over a frosted field. We hunt to see the morning come alive with wildlife going through their daily activities, not knowing we are even there.
We hunt to hear the sound of geese flying high in the sky, a turkey gobbler trying to attract a mate, the retrieve or the point of a well-trained dog, ducks settling into a spread of decoys, or deer standing in a frosted field.
We hunt to feel the cold wind on our faces and the warm sun on our back. We hunt because there are no computers and televisions, and we escape for a little while. We hunt because we get to spend quality time with our kids and grandkids. We hunt because it has created lifelong friendships. We make memories that will never be erased.
We hunt to see a deer sneaking through the woods. Sometimes, we don’t even draw our bow or raise our guns. But when we do, most of us are respectful of the animal. Some of us thank God for the opportunity to feed our family and enjoy this moment.
In my older age, I don’t hunt like I used to. When I was out there hunting, my favorite time deer hunting was when I was sitting in a treestand waiting for the deer to come by my secret hiding place. It was great to be alone with God and thank him for his son Jesus. I still thank him for all the blessings he gave me in the great outdoors that He created for me and others to enjoy.
That’s why we hunt.
