Most of the time, life is going along just fine. We are content. We are happy. Suddenly, without warning, storms of life can happen.
Mark 4:35-5:1 tells about a terrible storm. The disciples were with Jesus on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. As Jesus slept, a furious storm came up. The disciples were afraid for their lives. Did God not care? Were they not handpicked by Jesus and closest to him? Were they not obeying Jesus when He told them to go to the other side? Why were they going through this storm?
A wall of water blocked Peter’s view of Jesus walking toward him on the water. Peter took his eyes off Jesus and put his eyes on the storm. When he did, he sank into the water. If you give a storm in your life more attention than Jesus, you might do the same.
There are lots of storms in this world right now. Politics, threats of war, family problems, cancer and other illnesses, old age, the list goes on. None of us are exempt from the storms of life. We never know when they will come.
A lot of us have been through some storms lately. Some of us are still going through them. We may not understand why God allows storms of life to happen to us. Like the disciples, let your storms bring you closer to God through them.
For some, the storms have ended. For others, the storms are still to come. For others, the storms continue, and the boat is still rocking. We never know what kind of storm will hit us. Whether or not storms come, you never know. But where you look during a storm, you can.
There will be storms in life. They may not end the way we want. But you will get through them. Keeping your eyes on Jesus will help you get through the storms of life.
The words of this song might help some –
Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim. In the light of his glory and grace.
