For Christmas a few years ago, I surprised my wife with two tickets to see the musical “Lion King” at Juanita K. Hammons Hall in Springfield. Truthfully, I was thought she would want to take one of her lady friends with her to see it. She would not want me to go, would she? She did.
I thought if she can put up with me through over 50 years of marriage, I could sit through 2 hours watching a musical with her. I am glad I did! I enjoyed it and our time together.
One of the songs they sang in the musical was “Hakuna Matata”. I think about the lyrics sometimes and sing it in my head. That is a lot better than me singing it out loud.
Hakuna Matata! What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata! Ain’t no passing craze
It means no worries for the rest of your days
It’s our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata!
The words Hakuna Matata roughly translates to no worries in Swahili. It means to not worry about things outside of your control.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:27, “You cannot add any time to your life by worrying about it.” Worrying is one job you cannot farm out, but you can overcome it. David declares in Psalm 23:2, “He leads me beside the still waters.” Did you get that? He leads me. He is ahead of me. He is in front. God leads us. What a difference that makes.
That also reminds me of another song I do, sometimes sing out loud. “Don’t
Worry, Be Happy”.
Here’s a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry, be happy
Put your trust in God. Pray and ask Him to take care of your needs. Cast your cares and worries on Him and depend on Him. God not only loves us, He cares what happens to us. That reminds me of another song that I love to hear our pastor Scotty sing. “His Eye Is on the Sparrow”.
Why should I feel discouraged?
And why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for a heavenly home?
When Jesus is my portion
And my constant friend is He
You know, his eye is on the little sparrow
And I know he cares for you and me

One response to “Hakuna Matata!”
I Love this. A friend & I got to see it at Juanita K. Hammons. It was great & I didn’t know what the words meant to that song. THANKS for that bit of information. My friend now has Alzheimer’s & we no longer attend such events. SO GLAD WE WENT WHEN WE HAD THE CHANCE!!!❤️
